'A Spectre Calls' by Tom Grieves |
Tom and Hal’s astonishment at finding Annie’s rota for looking after Eve is interrupted by the unexpected arrival of Alfie Kirby, a ghost from 1975. After explaining that he has been sent from the other side by Nina, to help with looking after Eve, Kirby wastes no time in making himself at home; however, his friendly disposition hides a sinister motive, and he begins to sow the seeds of dissent amongst Annie, Tom and Hal by telling tales against them, and even getting Tom’s hopes up about a twenty-first birthday party that has never been planned. When Eve gets a temperature Annie panics and calls a doctor, getting Tom and Hal to pose as gay parents for the home visit; the doctor diagnoses an ear infection and prescribes medication, but becomes suspicious at the absence of any record of the child. As the doctor makes to leave in his car, Kirby follows him and induces a fatal heart attack into his victim... Hal confronts Kirby over his murderous actions, but the spectre blackmails him into helping win over Annie’s trust: it seems that Kirby wants them all to become one big happy family – so he can then break everything apart to leave just him and Eve...
